29 Days of Local Black History: Dr. Joslin Mar-Dai Pickens and Dr. Kimberly Lynne Pickens
First African American women and sister team to earn Doctoral Degrees from Louisiana State University at Shreveport
Sister, Sister! Dr. Joslin Mar-Dai Pickens and Dr. Kimberly Lynne Pickens are today’s highlighted Black History makers. The sister duo made history by not only being the two of the first three to earn doctoral degrees in Education – Higher Education Leadership from Louisiana State University at Shreveport (LSUS), but also being the first African American females as well as the first and only sister duo to do so.
Their bond is one to be admired. They are more than just sisters; they are co-workers and co-owners of a rapidly expanding business. Both professors at Southern University at Shreveport, Dr. Joslin Mar-Dai is the Associate Professor of Communication and Department Chair of Communication and General Studies, while Dr. Kimberly Lynne is Assistant Professor of English – ensuring the next generation is equipped to lead our world to greater heights. Off campus, these ladies are blazing the healthy lifestyle and eating trail as owners of the newest and only Black-owned Vegan food service in Shreveport, Vegans on the Run, LLC.
They’ve studied, conquered and continue to make big moves in the city, yet Dr. Joslin Mar-Dai beams in pride in saying, “Our most important career is being mothers. I am mom to 18-year-old Jaylynn Mar’Dai, and she (Dr. Kimberly) is mom to 4-year-old Caelean.”
What great examples of paving the path for many young women, and aspiring entrepreneurs! We salute you both!
