29 Days of Local Black History: Dr. Sirporah S. Turner

The First female and first African American physician to practice in Shreveport, Dr. Sirporah S. Turner, went against all odds, opening Turner Infirmary in 1908.

Interestingly, she and her mother, Delilah Robinson, oversaw the training of student nurses, even while maintaining her practice in the city.

A role model and trailblazer for women, black and medicine, she left huge shoes to fill after her passing at the age of 47 in California.

We are grateful for her fearless strides in caring for women in the city and beyond.  Thank you, Dr. Sirporah S. Turner!
