Over 300 Students will graduate from Southern University at Shreveport today

Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA) has a lot to celebrate at this year’s Spring Commencement. Over 300 students with various accomplishments are scheduled to walk the stage on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. This year’s ceremony will be held at the Shreveport Convention Center, 400 Caddo Street, downtown Shreveport. Parking is free in the adjacent parking garage.

Some of the degrees and certificates to be conferred this year include Radiologic Technology, Computer Science, Surgical Technology, Business Management, Accounting, and Criminal Justice. The largest division to confer is the Division of Allied Health Sciences and Nursing, with the largest group within this division receiving an Associate of Science in Nursing.

This year’s graduating class also includes first-time degrees in two of SUSLA’s newest disciplines of Polysomnography (the study of sleep) and Teaching (grades 1-5). Additionally, regional high school seniors from Booker T. Washington, Huntington, John Ehret, Lincoln Preparatory, Mansfield, as well as Woodlawn Leadership Academy will walk the stage. These students under the dual enrollment program will receive college certificates and degrees in studies ranging from Psychology to Computer Science.

This year’s commencement speaker is Southern University System board member Ms. Zazell V. Dudley. Ms. Dudley is a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, and currently serves as Director of Economic Development for the Caddo-Bossier Parishes Port Commission.

Ms. Dudley’s career includes having worked for several Fortune 100 companies in various industries. She received a Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering from Louisiana Tech University, where she became the first African American female to receive this named degree. She also holds a Master of Business Administration from Dallas Baptist University, where she earned a 4.0-grade point average and completed all coursework for Certified Economic Developer by the
International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

Ms. Dudley is a 1979 Booker T. Washington High School graduate in Shreveport. She is a member of numerous professional and civic organizations, including the Caddo Industrial Development Board, and serves as a trustee for the Shreveport Charter Foundation.
